The four unfollow protections (they are not the same thing)
Cleanup is where mistakes hurt most, so IG AutoFollow layers four different protections. New users sometimes ask why there are four — because each answers a different question:

How they combine: protections are cumulative — matching any one of them is enough for an account to be skipped. The Safe List is checked first, so a listed account is untouchable no matter what the other settings say.
Safe List — protect accounts you never want to unfollow
Also commonly called a whitelist or protected accounts list. Add any username — friends, family, clients, accounts you follow for the content — and no cleanup session will ever touch it, whether or not they follow you back.
- Free plan: add usernames manually, as many as you need.
- PRO: snapshot your entire current following into the list in one click — ideal before a first big cleanup, so sessions only ever consider people you followed after the snapshot. Note the honest boundary: the snapshot is point-in-time — accounts you follow later are not added automatically.
- Storage: the list lives in your browser's extension storage. It survives browser restarts and extension updates; uninstalling the extension deletes it. There is currently no export or cloud backup.
Skip Mutual Followers — cleanup that only touches non-followers
With this on, an unfollow session leaves every mutual connection untouched: only people who don't follow you back remain eligible. The follow-back status used is the one Instagram reports when the session processes that account — not a stale list from days ago. This is the setting behind the classic "unfollow only people who don't follow me back" workflow (full context: three ways to check who doesn't follow back).
7-Day Grace Period — fresh follows get their fair chance
Follow-backs typically arrive one to three days after a follow, with a tail of up to two weeks — we've measured this. The grace period skips anyone you followed within the last 7 days, so cleanup never removes someone who was still deciding.
Manual Confirmation — you approve every unfollow
For full control, the session pauses at each eligible account and waits for your click. Slower by design; nothing happens without you.
Follow targeting filters: who is worth one of your follows
Before any follow happens, every candidate passes through your filters. The same filter set applies to all four target sources — a profile's followers, a profile's following, a post's likers, or a post's commenters:

Three rules that competitors' documentation rarely spells out, so we will:
- Filters combine with AND. A candidate must pass every enabled filter to be followed. One failure = skipped.
- Filters run before the action. A skipped account costs you nothing — your daily budget is spent only on follows that actually happen.
- Every skip is logged with its reason. The live session log shows exactly who was skipped and why — no silent decisions.
One honesty note on the profile picture filter: a missing photo is a useful screening signal for abandoned and throwaway accounts — it is not proof an account is fake, and we won't pretend a filter is a quality oracle.
Never Follow Twice — the permanent memory
IG AutoFollow remembers every account it has ever followed for you — up to 100,000 of them, within your installation — and skips them in all future sessions. That includes accounts you later unfollowed, which prevents the embarrassing follow → unfollow → follow-again loop that makes accounts look spammy.
- What it does: permanently excludes previously-targeted accounts from every future follow session.
- What it doesn't: accounts skipped by a filter are not added to this memory — they were never followed, so they can be reconsidered in later sessions (for example after you loosen a filter). And like all local data, the memory does not survive uninstalling the extension.
- Versus Skip My Followers: that filter looks at their status now (do they follow me?); Never Follow Twice looks at your history (have I ever targeted them?). Two different shields that work together.
Auto Like protections: what gets liked vs what gets skipped
Before every like, the extension checks whether the item is eligible:

Filters we don't currently have — on purpose, and honestly
Some competing tools filter by verified status, business/personal type, post count, follower-to-following ratio, last-post recency or bio keywords. IG AutoFollow currently does not. We'd rather tell you that plainly than hide it behind "advanced AI-powered quality scoring" — a phrase that, in this category, usually means nothing measurable. Our rule: we only ship filters whose behavior we can support reliably and document exactly. The pacing layer under everything
All of the above sits on the same safety engine: random 4–15 second gaps between actions, cool-down breaks, Auto-Day Mode that splits your daily budget into natural sessions, hard daily ceilings (free: 7 per mode; PRO €7.99/month: up to 200 follows, 200 unfollows, 100 likes), and automatic back-off the moment Instagram refuses an action. Frequently asked questions
Are the filters combined with AND or OR?
AND. An account must pass every filter you have enabled — follower range, following range, profile picture, existing-follower check — to be followed. Failing any single filter skips the account, and the skip appears in the session log with its reason.
Does a skipped account use up one of my daily actions?
No. Filters run before the follow happens, so a skipped account costs nothing — your daily budget is only spent on follows that actually go through. On the free plan's 7 follows per day, that means all 7 land on accounts that passed every filter.
Do the same filters work on followers, following, likers and commenters?
Yes. Whichever target source you choose — a profile's followers or following, or a post's likers or commenters — the same filter set applies identically before any follow happens.
What is the difference between the Safe List and Skip Mutual Followers?
The Safe List protects specific accounts you chose by name — they are never unfollowed, whether they follow you or not. Skip Mutual Followers protects a dynamic group: everyone who currently follows you back. Use the Safe List for people who matter regardless of status, and Skip Mutuals to make cleanup touch only non-followers.
Does the PRO Safe List snapshot protect accounts I follow later?
No — the snapshot is point-in-time. It adds everyone you follow at the moment you take it, which is ideal before a first big cleanup. Accounts you follow after the snapshot are not added automatically; add them manually if you want them permanently protected, or rely on the grace period and mutual protection.
Does uninstalling the extension delete my Safe List and follow memory?
Yes. The Safe List, the never-follow-twice memory and your activity logs live in your browser's extension storage, on your device — exactly as our privacy policy describes. Uninstalling the extension or clearing its storage removes them, and there is currently no export or cloud backup for these lists.
What is the difference between Skip My Followers and Never Follow Twice?
Skip My Followers looks at the present: it skips anyone who currently follows you, so you never spend a follow on an existing fan. Never Follow Twice looks at the past: it skips anyone this installation has ever followed before, including people you later unfollowed. One is about their status now, the other about your history with them.
Does the profile picture filter require a real photo?
It checks whether the account has uploaded any custom profile picture, versus still using Instagram's default blank avatar. It is a screening signal for abandoned or throwaway accounts — a practical filter, not a claim that every pictureless account is fake.
